As an author, have you had trouble with how to sell books in face to face meetings with customers?
Most writers are not salesmen by nature. This is why many signings turn into a big waste of time for self-published authors. It is embarrassing, sitting at a table in a book store all by yourself for an hour or more, staring at the shelves, twiddling your thumbs, and trying to avoid looks from the sales clerks. If you want to learn how to sell books and make your signings worthwhile, you need to understand how your buyer will perceive you, the unknown author with your stack of books.

Choose Your Book Signings Wisely
First of all, it’s flattering to be invited to do a book signing, but don’t set one up in an area where your target audience doesn’t shop. For instance, if you have a motivational novel targeted for young people, why would you do a signing in a shopping mall where senior citizens are the main demographic? You’re not likely to sell many copies. Do explore on an area before committing to appear.
Marketing Materials
Secondly, you have to come ready with book marketing materials. Don’t ever go to an event without fliers with more facts about your work (preferably bookmarks because they are less cumbersome for your inherent readers and useful). Also, have a pro poster designed and mounted on an 18 x 24 or 24 x 36 inch board that can be placed on an easel. Be sure the store boss has display stands available for your signing.
Bring Them In With a Bookmark
Thirdly, you have to call habitancy over to your table to originate sales. A good, engaging display will bring interest, but in some cases habitancy will just glance over your table and keep browsing through the store. Hand them a bookmark before they pass, smile, and ask them if they like your type of books (novels, self-help, enterprise guides, etc). You will be surprised how many habitancy will buy a copy, just because you said “Hi!”
Tip: If you unmistakably want to learn how to sell books, go to a major book fair, like the Harlem Book Fair or Bea, full of self-publishers. Watch the ones who seem to be selling consistently while the others sit and wait for the sun to set. It’s a great learning experience.
